Former Under Secretary of Defense for Policy

John C. Rood served as the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy.  He assumed this position on January 9, 2018.  In this role he served as the principal advisor to the Secretary of Defense for defense policy and leads the formulation and coordination of national security policy within the Department of Defense.  Mr. Rood oversaw the integration of defense polices and plans to achieve desired objectives.  He was responsible for efforts to build partnerships and defense cooperation with U.S. friends and allies.

Mr. Rood brings more than three decades of public and private sector experience to this position, including over 20 years of service in the U.S. Government at the Department of State, Department of Defense, National Security Council, Central Intelligence Agency, and as a Staff Member in the U.S. Senate.  At the Department of State, he served as Acting Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, and as Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Nonproliferation.  Mr. Rood served in the Department of Defense as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Forces Policy.  He served twice at the National Security Council where he was a Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Counter proliferation, as well as the Director of Proliferation Strategy, Counterproliferation, and Homeland Defense.  At the Central Intelligence Agency, he served as an analyst following missile programs in foreign countries.  In addition, Mr. Rood worked as a Senior Policy Advisor to U.S. Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona.

In the private sector, Mr. Rood was Senior Vice President of Lockheed Martin International where he led efforts to grow the corporation’s international business.  He also served as Vice President for Corporate Domestic Business Development at Lockheed Martin.  Prior to joining Lockheed Martin, he was a Vice President at the Raytheon Company.

Mr. Rood holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Arizona State University.

Sanjay Nayar (Mumbai) joined KKR in 2009 and is a Member and CEO of KKR India. Nayar is also a member of the Asia Portfolio Management Committee and the Asia Investment Committee. Mr. Nayar is on the board of KKR’s portfolio companies Magma Financial Services, Gland, Apollo Hospitals, and Coffee Day Holdings, Avendus Capital and Max Financial Services, and has had significant involvement with KKR’s investment in Avantha. Mr. Nayar  also supports expanding the range of KKR’s credit and capital markets offerings across the region.

Prior to joining KKR, he served as CEO of Citigroup’s Indian and South Asian operations and as a member of Citigroup’s Management Committee and Asia Executive Operating Committee.

Mr. Nayar was the deputy chairman of the Indian Banks Association (IBA), a member of the board of USISPF, and co-chairman of the Banking Committee for the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and SEBI’s Board of NISM and Alternative Investment Fund (AIF). Mr. Nayar also served on the Committee of the Reserve Bank of India tasked with building a Centre for Advanced Financial Learning (CAFL).

Currently, Mr. Nayar is on the board of Habitat for Humanity, Pratham and Grameen Capital and ISB, and is a founding member of the Brookings Foundation, India. Mr. Nayar was recently appointed to the Board of Emerging Markets Private Equity Association (EMPEA), and served until recently as the Chairman of the Indian Private Venture Capital Association.

Arne M. Sorenson is Former President & CEO, Marriott International. Following Marriott’s September 2016 acquisition of Starwood Hotels and Resorts, the company includes more than 6,200 properties across 30 leading hotel brands spanning 125 countries and territories. In fiscal year 2016, Marriott reported revenues of more than $17 billion.

Mr. Sorenson joined Marriott in 1996. He became the third CEO in the company’s history in 2012—and the first without the Marriott surname. Prior to that, he served as Marriott’s President and Chief Operating Officer. He has held a number of positions, including Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, and President of Continental European Lodging. He was elected to Marriott’s Board of Directors in 2011.

Additionally, Mr. Sorenson served as Vice Chair of the President’s Export Council. He is the immediate past Board Chair for Brand USA and continues as a member of the board. He was most recently named to the Board of Directors of the Economic Club of Washington, D.C., serving as Chair of the Global Initiative. Other affiliations include: Chair, U.S. Travel Association CEO Roundtable; member of the Luther College Board of Regents; Stewardship Board of the World Economic Forum System Initiative on Shaping the Future of Mobility; and, member of the Board of Trustees for The Brookings Institution. Mr. Sorenson’s Influencer blog, which appears on LinkedIn, has approximately 500,000 followers.

Mr. Sorenson co-founded Marriott’s Global Sustainability Council in 2007. The following year, he launched Marriott’s rainforest preservation partnership with the Amazonas Sustainable Foundation in Brazil.

Mr. Sorenson chairs Marriott’s Global Diversity and Inclusion Council. The Council, along with the Marriott Board of Directors’ Committee for Excellence, monitors and evaluates Marriott’s strategy to promote a diverse workforce as well as ownership, customer, and vendor communities around the world.

Before Mr. Sorenson joined Marriott, he was a partner with the law firm Latham & Watkins in Washington, D.C., where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions litigation.

Mr. Sorenson is a graduate of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and the University of Minnesota Law School. He and his wife, Ruth, live in the Washington, D.C., area, where they raised their four children.

Dow Wilson retired as CEO and Director of Varian upon the sale of the company to Siemens Healthineers in the spring of 2021.  Dow  remains an Advisor to Siemens HealthineersVarian was a NYSE listed cancer equipment and services company with annual sales over $3B and a market cap over $16B.  Dow transformed the company from a traditional capital equipment company to a double digit sales and earnings growth company with a dynamic brand and strategy.  Dow refocused the company portfolio by spinning out a radiology components business and doubling down aggressively on the company’s strong reputation in cancer.  Dow oversaw key acquisitions into cancer clinical services, software, interventional oncology, and global expansion.  At the same time, nearly doubled investment (as a % of sales) in organic initiatives several of which became billion dollar global product platforms.  Dow joined Varian in 2005 as President of the Oncology business and later became COO before his appointment as CEO in 2012.  Prior to Varian, Dow worked in senior executive roles at General Electric where he ran significant businesses in both Healthcare and Plastics.

Dow has served on several company boards and is currently Director and Audit Chair at AgilentDow also was on the Board and Chair of the Technology and Regulatory Committee at AdvaMedDow continues to serve on the board of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum.  From 2014 to 2020 Dow served by appointment from the US Secretary of Commerce on the President’s Advisory Council on Doing Business in Africa and later on the CEO Forum for Brazil, where Dow served as co-chair.

A graduate of Brigham Young University, Dow also holds an MBA from the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.

Charles R. Kaye, Co-Chief Executive Officer, has been with Warburg Pincus since 1986 and has been jointly responsible for the management of the firm since 2000. Mr. Kaye lived in Hong Kong from 1994 to 1999, where Mr. Kaye was instrumental in the launch and development of Warburg Pincus’ Asia operations.

Mr. Kaye is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and co-chairman of the Partnership Fund for New York City and the International Advisory Board of the Center for the Advanced Study of India (CASI). Mr. Kaye currently serves on the Board of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum, as an investment committee member of Sheridan Production Partners, as well as a member of the Board of Trustees of New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
