Glimpses from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Historic State Visit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the U.S. for a historic state visit on the invitation of U.S. President Joe Biden from June 21-23, 2023.He commenced his visit on June 21 to celebrate International Day of Yoga at the United Nations headquarters in New York followed by a private dinner with President Biden and the First Lady Jill Biden in the White House. On June 22, PM Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome on the White House lawns with over 7,000 members of the Indian diaspora community in attendance.

This was followed by significantly productive bilateral session between President Biden and Prime Minister Modi along with their teams. A detailed 58-para joint statement was released with one of the most significant deliverables announced. These included, in areas of defense, education, skill development, clean energy, and h1-B visas amongst others. On the trade front both sides achieved major breakthroughs as both sides agreed to terminate six outstanding disputes at the World Trade Organization. Following bilateral discussions, PM Modi addressed a historic joint session of the U.S. Congress for the second time. President Biden hosted a high-tech handshake roundtable at the White House, a State Dinner at the White House and on the last day of the visit, PM Modi was hosted by Vice President Kamala Harris and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken for a lunch which was followed by his iconic speech at the Kennedy Center hosted by USISPF.
